Caps Coming to Boston

A few things had to fall in place on Saturday for the Boston Bruins to draw a first-round matchup with the Washington Capitals. Sure enough, they all did. The Bruins will now open the playoffs vs. Washington this Thursday at the TD Garden at 7:30 pm.

The Capitals should make for an interesting matchup with the Bruins. The Caps have added firepower now with top-forward Nicklas Bäckström returning to the line-up after sitting out due to post-concussion complications for half the season. Bäckström tallied a goal and an assist in Saturday’s 4-1 win over the Rangers that clinched the 7 seed for the Capitals.

However, the injuries do not end there for Washington. Third-string goaltender Braden Holtby had to start yesterday’s game as both starter Tomáš Vokoun, and backup Michal Neuvirth were battling injuries. The status of both of them for the Capitals’ playoff run seems to up in the air according to reports. Not only is the Capitals’ concern with who is going to be able to start, they also need to be concerned with if the unthinkable happened and Holtby were to be hurt. The next man up would likely be Dany Sabourin, who has played in the Bruins organization previously.

Though the Bruins had only a 1-2-1 record against the Capitals this season, the Capitals’ goaltending questions paired with the Bruins strong run to end the regular season seem to point at Boston being able to get by Washington. The Bruins should be able to live on to defend their title for at least one more round.
